After a number of successful years of producing high quality wine grapes, when Chris and Sue Curran were unable to find a winery to take the second crop of Shiraz produced on their San Mateo Avenue property near Mildura, they answered an advertisement by Olsen Wines from Melbourne, Victoria.
Chris and Sue, with help of backpacker workers from around the world, harvested the grapes by hand and transported them to Melbourne on the weekends, helping with the crushing process once they arrived. Their only request to Olsen was that he creates a wine with minimum preservatives, creating a low-allergenic wine.
The first 5000 bottles were unoaked, the next slightly oaked. Some were blended with Grenache and Carina currants to make the Currans Family Wines second label and the remainder were stored in oak to be released the following year.
In September of 2002, Chris and Sue entered their Shiraz for the first time in the `Australian Inland Wine Show’ at Swan Hill and were rewarded for their “hard slog” with a trophy for Best Grape-growers Wine (less than 5000 litres). They’ve continued to win awards at numerous Wine Shows since these early days, and received great acclamations during a recent Trade Mission to the United States and Canada with Austrade, highlighting their Low Sulphur Wines and showcasing their unique Saragina Wine. Like so many others in the region, moving from a position where the industry had an over supply of premium grapes in the early years, the Curran’s are now winning awards and marketing their own label with the Mildura Murray Darling Region, in Melbourne, and soon internationally. Chris and Sue have continued to expand their boutique family run winery as time progresses with ongoing success. As more people become aware of low sulphur options when choosing their wines, the Curran Family Collection also gives choice to those seeking healthy alternatives. ![]() Originally written by Denise McCarthy Extracted from Sunraysia Daily |
